If believe we must, then the ancient Sumerians, Babylonians and the Greeks and Norsemen had it right. Their gods, male and female, had massive powers but were flawed with human-like emotional frailties. There was a god for everything, so if one was angry with you it was only the one you had to deal with, and a heroic human could. Other gods would often help you. There was hope. This life can be a grand adventure. Optimistic active free will at its best.
In the monotheistic religions of Abraham, there is only one perfect all powerful male god, impossible for a human to live up to, or contest, and everything is out of our hands but resignation and total surrender. This life is to be endured in the hope of a better afterlife. Pessimistic passive fatalism at its best.
